SUMMARY:SIIA Talk | US-Israel-Iran: Implications for Geopolitics\, International Law\, and the Global Economy
DESCRIPTION:Attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran have prompted retaliatory strikes across the Middle East\, hitting Israel and other countries in the region. Critics have argued that the operation is both illegal under US law without congressional approval and a violation of international law. Spillover effects are already emerging\, with oil prices rising and Iran attempting to close the Strait of Hormuz\, a waterway that handles nearly a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade. This dialogue jointly organised by the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) and the Middle East Institute (MEI) will examine the geopolitical\, legal\, and economic questions arising from the crisis.  \n\nWhat are the political implications of the conflict\, not just for the Middle East\, but for the rest of the world including Southeast Asia and Singapore? \nDoes this action by the US and Israel mean an upending of the basic tenets of international law? What does this mean for countries like Singapore? \nWhat impact\, both immediate and in the medium to long-term\, could this have on trade with the Middle East and for businesses in general? \n\nSpeakers:\nMs. Angela Mancini\, Partner\, Head of Geopolitical Risk Analysis – APAC\, Control Risks\nProf. Joseph Liow\, Chairman\, Middle East Institute (MEI)\, National University of Singapore (NUS)\nMr. Simon Tay\, Chairman\, Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA)  \nModerator: Ms. Michelle Teo\, Executive Director\, Middle East Institute (MEI)\, National University of Singapore (NUS) \nProgramme: \n \nRegistration Form\n \nThank you for your interest in our event. SUMMARY:SIIA Talk | U.S. Tariff Turbulence: Legal Uncertainty in Washington and What It Means for ASEAN Business
DESCRIPTION:U.S. tariff policy is once again in flux. Recent court rulings and legal challenges have cast fresh doubt on the legal foundations of major trade measures. In February\, the Trump administration introduced a temporary 15% global import tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974\, but it is not clear if these will last past July. Key questions remain over whether tariffs could rise further under other laws and the legal basis that sustain them. \nThis uncertainty is prompting businesses and governments to reassess the direction\, durability\, and credibility of U.S. trade policy. For ASEAN economies deeply integrated into global supply chains\, the stakes are especially high as trade policy becomes more entangled with geopolitics\, energy market volatility\, and wider economic pressures. If tariffs can be reworked under new legal justifications\, what does that mean for the reliability of established trade arrangements with Washington? \nSpeakers:\nMr. Alex Feldman\, Partner\, The Asia Group\nMs. Elizabeth Chelliah\, Principal Trade Consultant\, CFOTI\, Singapore Business Federation (SBF); former Principal Trade Specialist (PTS)\, Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI)\, Republic of Singapore  \nModerator: Mr. Simon Tay\, Chairman\, Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) \nProgramme \n \nRegistration Form\nSalutation *Please selectMr.Ms.Dr.Prof.OthersFirst Name *Last Name *Email Address *CC Email AddressMobile NumberDesignation *Job Level *Please selectC-Level (CEO\, CFO\, Chairman)Management (Directors\, VPs\, Senior Partners)Managers\, Consultants\, AssociatesExecutive\, OthersOrganisation *Industry *Please selectAcademia\, EducationAgri-business\, ForestryConsultancyFinancial ServicesGovernmentInformation TechnologyLogistics\, Supply ChainManufacturingMediaNGOsOil and GasStudentTravel\, Tourism\, HospitalityOthersKindly specify your industry if you have selected “Others”.Nationality *Singaporean CitizenPermanent ResidentOthers:Please state: *Age Range *Please select18 - 2930 - 4041 - 5051 - 6061 and aboveHow did you hear about this event? *Please selectI am an SIIA MemberI was invited by a MemberNewsletterSocial MediaWebsiteSpeakerSponsorSupporting OrganisationI would love to be informed about other SIIA events\, newly-released insights\, and the latest publications. *YesNoBy registering to this event\, I agree to the following: 1.1 The Singapore Institute of International Affairs will use the lawful basis of ‘legitimate interest’ to pass on your contact details to sponsors/partners of the event.
