Geopolitical tensions and the actions of major powers are constantly reshaping the global economy. Most recently\, the war in the Middle East and the resulting energy crisis have introduced a new layer of volatility for governments and businesses alike. This comes on top of the prolonged US-China rivalry and ongoing uncertainty over the Trump administration’s tariffs.  \nAmidst this turbulence\, ASEAN and the broader Asian region find themselves caught in the middle\, navigating sharper strategic pressures and tighter economic constraints within an increasingly fluid regional order. In this challenging landscape\, ASEAN and Asia’s ability to sustain their competitive edge will depend increasingly on how effectively they exercise agency\, carve out strategic space\, and shape their own outcomes. SUMMARY:[Closed-door] ATTS focus group on AI Skilling Opportunities for SMEs in Southeast Asia: A Policy Perspective for Inclusive Growth
DESCRIPTION:The ASEAN Think Tanks Summit (ATTS) workshop on “AI Skilling Opportunities for SMEs in Southeast Asia: A Policy Perspective for Inclusive Growth” will address the following issues: \nThe virtual FGD will examine the current state of AI skills adoption among SMEs and the barriers to accessing relevant training. We will explore the opportunities and challenges facing ASEAN’s SME in the use of AI to support their needs. This ranges from the use of AI to hire effectively and ethically\, to the availability of affordable upskilling resources. Through collaborative dialogue\, we aim to surface actionable insights that can inform regional policy and support multi-stakeholder efforts to bridge the AI skills gap across Southeast Asia. \nThe discussions from this workshop will be presented at the 3rd ATTS for further deliberations. The ATTS is an annual Track 1.5 dialogue held at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta\, organised by the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA)\, the ASEAN Institutes of Strategic and International Studies (ASEAN-ISIS) network\, and other think tank partners. Insights from ATTS workshops held throughout the year will be incorporated into the 3rd ATTS policy memorandum to be circulated to the ASEAN Secretariat and the Permanent Representatives of ASEAN Member States (AMS).

DESCRIPTION:The ASEAN Think Tanks Summit (ATTS) workshop on “Strengthening ASEAN’s Energy Security and Regional Economic Resilience” will address the following issues: \nThe virtual FGD will examine the implications of external energy shocks on ASEAN economies and assess the effectiveness of existing regional energy cooperation arrangements. We will explore key vulnerabilities and implementation gaps across areas such as regional emergency coordination\, information-sharing\, stockpiling\, cross-border energy interconnectivity\, regional energy trade and supply diversification. The discussion will also consider the links between energy security\, critical supply chains\, carbon neutrality and macroeconomic resilience\, as well as opportunities to strengthen institutional coordination\, infrastructure financing and cooperation with ASEAN’s external partners. Through collaborative dialogue\, we aim to identify practical short- and medium-term priorities that can strengthen ASEAN’s preparedness\, regional interconnectivity and economic resilience. \nThe discussions from this workshop will be presented at the 3rd ATTS for further deliberations.
