Mr. Aaron Choo, SIIA’s Senior Assistant Director (Sustainability and Special Projects), was featured on CNA 938 to discuss the hotter, drier days ahead and the return of haze risk to Singapore.

Beyond typical seasonal variation, current conditions suggest a hotter year, with elevated risks of heatwaves, regional wildfires, and transboundary haze. Driven in part by El Niño and broader climate trends, this is unlikely to be limited to March and April, with risks potentially intensifying towards mid-year. SIIA’s annual Haze Outlook report, to be released in June, will provide further assessment of the haze outlook.

In the interview, he discussed how Singapore defines and manages heat risk, the implications of rising temperatures on energy and water demand, and why climate adaptation is becoming an increasing policy priority. The conversation also touched on regional challenges, including food security pressures and the need to strengthen implementation of ASEAN climate strategies.
