ASEAN is working towards the establishment of an ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, with a single market and production base. ASEAN firms stand to benefit from freer access to other ASEAN countries and greater economies of scale. But the development of the AEC is also being watched closely by US companies. ASEAN’s integration efforts come amidst renewed American interest in engagement with the region, what has been called the US “pivot” to Asia. This boardroom briefing with US Ambassador to ASEAN David L. Carden will examine how US officials and American firms view the AEC, from its opportunities to the top priorities that ASEAN must address.
- How are US companies showing interest in ASEAN, in line with US government efforts to build stronger ties with Asia?
- How will the AEC affect ASEAN’s competitiveness? What are the key questions US businesses are asking?
- What do ASEAN officials and ASEAN companies need to focus on as we approach 2015?
