Titled “The Haze Fighters of Sungai Tohor”, this eco-documentary highlights how Indonesia’s land reform push to redistribute 12.7 million hectares to be managed by local communities can also be a move to empower at-risk communities in their fight against haze. In May 2017, SIIA visited one such community, the village of Sungai Tohor in Riau, which has wrested back control over its lands from concession companies that the community blames for causing fires and haze. This land reform efforts will see this community playing a stronger role in mitigating climate change impacts and preventing the causes of fires and haze in its vicinity. This documentary focuses on the village of Sungai Tohor as an example of Indonesia’s overall land reform efforts.
Besides increasing awareness on the power of community efforts in protecting the environment, the SIIA also hopes that this documentary would sow the seeds of serious, sustainable collaboration among stakeholders, key players and passionate environmentalists across the environmental sector.
About the documentary: This eco-documentary is produced as part of SIIA’s Sustainability programme which focuses on environmental and resource issues faced by Singapore and ASEAN.
