As the ruling NLD party in Myanmar claims a resounding victory in the country’s second election, Myanmar faces much scrutiny internationally due to its democratic process and human rights violation. In an interview with CNBC, Associate Professor Simon Tay, Chairman of the SIIA, said democracy is in transition in Myanmar due to the strong military influence in politics. Currently, 25 per cent of seats in parliament are reserved for the military and it has control over three key ministries – Defence, Border and Home Affairs.
