A trilateral security pact was formed between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States (AUKUS) in September 2021. In an interview with FES Asia, Dr. Yeo Lay Hwee, Director, EU Centre in Singapore and Council Secretary at the SIIA, said, “AUKUS reflects the new reality that the US is no longer willing to underwrite on its own the bill of being a “global sheriff”. It will be increasingly leaning on its allies to do more for regional security and global challenges.”
