How can ASEAN strengthen its energy security while building greater economic resilience and regional integration?
On 28 August 2026, the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) convened a virtual focus group under the Economic Integration workstream of the 3rd ASEAN Think Tanks Summit (ATTS).
The discussion centred on the draft ATTS-ERIA Policy Brief/Paper, A Blueprint for ASEAN Energy Security, Economic Resilience, and Regional Integration, bringing together experts from government, international organisations, research institutions and the private sector to examine the region’s evolving energy risk landscape, implementation gaps and priority actions.
A key takeaway was that energy security, economic resilience and regional integration are closely interconnected. With frameworks such as the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Petroleum Security (APSA) and ASEAN Power Grid (APG) already in place, participants emphasised the need to move from frameworks to effective implementation.
Insights from the discussion will help refine the ATTS-ERIA Policy Brief/Paper for presentation at the 3rd ATTS in September at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, and inform the 3rd ATTS Policy Memorandum ahead of the ASEAN Summit in November.
