SIIA Senior Fellow Dr Oh Ei Sun spoke to CNA938 on the ASEAN–EU Ministerial Meeting, held in Brunei from 27 to 28 April 2026.
Dr Oh noted that while the meeting signals continued commitment to the ASEAN–EU strategic partnership, it reflects both substantive efforts and high-level signalling amid ongoing geopolitical and energy uncertainties. He highlighted that disruptions linked to conflicts in the Middle East have heightened the urgency for cooperation, particularly in ensuring energy security and safeguarding freedom of navigation through critical maritime routes.
On trade, Dr Oh explained that both ASEAN and the EU share a strong interest in expanding market access and advancing a long-discussed free trade agreement. However, differences remain, particularly around environmental and regulatory standards. He added that while ASEAN–EU trade is growing, matching the scale of US-linked trade flows remains a challenge, with both sides instead focused on sustaining open trade principles even as protectionist sentiments rise globally.
Looking ahead, Dr Oh emphasised that beyond reaffirming multilateral commitments, both regions are prioritising resilience, particularly in supply chains for energy, food, and high-tech products.
