At the 15th Japan-Singapore Symposium, speakers emphasised the role of Japan and Singapore in upholding the rule-based international order amid the challenging geopolitical environment and the pandemic. Rising US-China tensions have seen the introduction of new frameworks such as the Quad and Aukus. Speaking at the forum, Associate Professor Simon Tay, Chairman of the SIIA, said, “We are cautious about any anti-China sentiment that does not acknowledge the interdependence (on ASEAN), and over-arrangements that might confine the group to a peripheral role.”
