President Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s State Visit to Tanzania marks a significant milestone in Singapore’s engagement with Africa. As Singapore seeks to strengthen ties with emerging markets and diversify its economic partnerships, the visit highlights growing opportunities for cooperation across the African continent.

Speaking to Lianhe Zaobao, SIIA Chairman Simon Tay noted that Africa presents increasing opportunities for cooperation in areas where Singapore has strong expertise. “Beyond expanding our diplomatic footprint, Singapore can leverage its strong reputation in Africa to deepen economic engagement and support Singapore companies in sectors where they are competitive, including ports and logistics, digital technology, and sustainability,” he said.

“Tanzania, for example, could potentially serve as a strong base for engagement because of its strategic location on the East African coast, relative political stability, market access, and regional connectivity,” he added.

Mr Tay noted that, beyond economic and trade cooperation, Singapore also places importance on building long-term partnerships, promoting technological cooperation, and facilitating mutual learning and exchange.

However, Africa is highly diverse, with significant differences in political systems, regulatory environments, and business conditions across countries. Singapore companies will need strong local knowledge, trusted partnerships, and a long-term commitment rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Singapore will also face competition from larger players, including China, the Gulf states, Europe, and India, which have already established deep economic and political links across the continent.

“It’s not totally new or out of the blue. It builds on past engagements and practical help and Singapore has earned trust and a degree of respect,” Mr Tay said. “To deepen cooperation and explore opportunities in East Africa, this can signal a next step forward and upward. Given global turbulence in a ‘Minus-Two’ world, reaching out to more partners makes sense for both sides.”
