In The Straits Times’ look ahead to Asia in 2026, SIIA Chairman Prof. Simon Tay shared his views on the limits of ASEAN’s conflict-management role amid growing geopolitical tensions and competition between major powers.

“We know the war negatively impacts ASEAN’s standing, and we can rue the cost. But there needs to be wisdom to recognise the difference between what we can hope for and what we can do. Over-expectation and over-reach can be even more destructive,” Prof. Tay said.
